The all-new 2005 Grand Cherokee "WH" export models will begin production in March 2005 and go on sale in April/May. The optional navigation radio, designated "REJ", will be very similar to the "REC" model that is being offered in the North American market WK Grand Cherokees. Both models feature a 5.8-inch full-color display, MP3 playback capabilty, AM/FM stereo and six-disc CD system. This is good news for Grand Cherokee export buyers as they were never offered the popular RB1 navigation radio that was available in North America for the WJ series.

Like the WK, the WH will feature two models at launch, the Laredo and Limited. The 2005 export model year will be short, starting March 7th and ending September 2nd so that 2006 models can coincide with the release of the 2006 models in North America. The SRT-8 Grand Cherokee will be offered in both the WK and the WH Grand Cherokee series for 2006.

Engines:

3.0 V6   Turbo diesel (mated with W5-A580 transmission, 3.55 axle ratio)

The all-new 3.0-litre V-6 CRD engine is a “next-generation” power unit from the DaimlerChrysler Group producing class-leading levels of power and torque, with good fuel economy. With Bosch high-pressure fuel injection (2000+ bar), a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, the new engine meets Euro 4 emissions standards without a diesel particulate filter. Maximum power is 218 hp (160 kW) and peak torque is 376 lb.-ft. (510 N•m) from just 1800 rpm.

For the diesel engine, a kick-down switch is now added to the accelerator pedal. This detent, reached before the full travel of the pedal, is intended to reduce transmission kick-downs during normal driving but still allow for full pedal travel when a quicker acceleration is wanted by the driver.

5.7 V8   Hemi with MDS (mated with 5-45RFE transmission, 3.73 axle ratio)

Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first SUV to offer the Multi-Displacement System (MDS). On the 5.7-litre HEMI engine, MDS deactivates half the cylinders during cruising and light acceleration to increase fuel economy by up to 20 percent, depending on driving conditions. Ninety percent of peak torque is available from 2400 to 5100 rpm for excellent performance while trailer towing or travelling off-road, as well as regular city and highway driving. A sophisticated Electronic Throttle Control system tailors throttle response to pedal movement based on operating conditions, and when cruise control is activated, maintains a more consistent vehicle speed on rolling grades than was possible with the previous mechanical throttle.

This control does not come at the expense of performance. The 5.7-litre HEMI engine provides class-leading power and torque, at 326 hp (240 kW) and 369 lb.-ft. torque (500 N•m). It also stands among the best in class for acceleration and fuel consumption.
