The Rain Sensing wiper system senses moisture on the windshield and automatically activates the wipers for the driver. An infrared beam is reflected off the outside surface of the windshield to the infrared sensor array. When moisture
strikes the windshield, the system experiences an interruption to its infrared beam.
Advanced analog and digital signal processing determines the intensity of rain or snow. The sensor communicates to the wiper control module to switch on the wiper motor and controls the wipers automatically according to the moisture intensity detected. The feature is especially useful for road splash or overspray from the windshield washers of the vehicle ahead. The end of the multi-function lever can be rotated to one of six settings to activate this feature. This feature was first introduced as an option on the 2002 Limited and Overland models. For 2005, the Rain Sensing wipers are Standard equipment on all Limited models and are not available on the Laredo.
The sensitivity of the system can be adjusted with the multi-function lever. Wiper delay position 1 is the least sensitive, and wiper delay position 5 is the most sensitive. Setting 3 should be used for normal rain conditions. Settings 1 and 2 can be used if the driver desires less wiper sensitivity. Settings 4 and 5 can be used if the driver desires more sensitivity. Place the wiper switch in the OFF position when not using the system.
